Security

Security is the foundation of national stability, yet in Nigeria it has become a symbol of failure. Insecurity is widespread, persistent, and increasingly violent holding back development, destroying communities, and forcing millions to live in fear.

Nigeria’s security system is shattered. Overstretched security forces, weak coordination, poor intelligence, and years of neglect have left the country struggling to respond effectively to evolving threats.

From terrorism in the North-East to banditry in the North-West, kidnapping across regions, and communal violence in the Middle Belt, insecurity has become a nationwide crisis. A country of over 200 million people cannot function under constant threat. This is unacceptable. Nigeria cannot grow, invest, or develop in an environment defined by fear and instability.

Today, the consequences are visible everywhere with displaced communities, attacked schools, disrupted businesses, and a daily life shaped by uncertainty. What should guarantee safety has become reactive and weak. What should inspire confidence now generates fear.

Nigeria’s security crisis is not chance it is the result of years of weak leadership, poor coordination, and failure to address root causes. Left unresolved, it will continue to undermine national survival.

However, this crisis also presents an opportunity for reform. With strong leadership, modern strategy, and accountability, Nigeria’s security system can be rebuilt to protect lives, restore order, and secure national progress.

Nigeria’s security challenges are deep-seated and interconnected:

  • Terrorism and Insurgency: Armed extremist groups continue to attack communities and security formations, especially in the North-East, destabilising national peace and safety.

  • Banditry and Mass Kidnapping: Criminal gangs have turned kidnapping into an industry, targeting schools, highways, and rural communities, creating widespread fear and disruption.

  • Communal and Resource Conflicts: Violent clashes over land and resources continue across the Middle Belt, displacing communities and deepening ethnic tensions.
  • Separatist Tensions and Civil Disruption: Agitations and unrest in parts of the South-East continue to disrupt economic activities and weaken regional stability.
  • Oil Theft and Maritime Insecurity: Illegal oil bunkering and piracy continue to drain national revenue and undermine economic security in the South-South.

  • Weak Security Architecture: Security agencies remain under-equipped, under-coordinated, and overstretched, leading to delayed and ineffective responses.
  • Porous Borders and Arms Proliferation: Weak border control allows illegal weapons and criminal networks to flow freely across the country.

  • Poverty and Unemployment: Economic hardship continues to fuel recruitment into criminal and extremist groups.
  • Corruption and Poor Accountability: Mismanagement of security resources continues to weaken operations and reduce trust in security institutions.

Solutions

Addressing Nigeria’s security crisis requires decisive leadership that directly targets both the threats and their root causes. A Makinde Administration will implement practical, coordinated reforms that restore safety and rebuild trust in the security system.

  • Strengthen Frontline Capacity and Intelligence: Expand and properly equip security forces, improve intelligence gathering, and deploy advanced surveillance systems to detect and prevent terrorist attacks before they happen, especially in the North-East.
  • Rapid Response and Rural Security Expansion: Establish well-trained rapid response units, increase security presence in rural and high-risk areas, and deploy surveillance technology to secure schools, highways, and vulnerable communities.
  • Structured Peacebuilding and Land Reform: Introduce formal conflict resolution mechanisms, strengthen local peace committees, and implement modern land and agricultural frameworks to reduce farmer–herder clashes and inter-communal violence.
  • Separatist Tensions and Civil Disruption → Dialogue, Security Balance, and Community Engagement: Combine strengthened security presence with structured civic engagement and dialogue mechanisms to reduce unrest while restoring order and stability in affected regions.
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection: Deploy specialised security units, surveillance technology, and coordinated maritime patrols to protect oil pipelines, coastal assets, and national energy infrastructure from sabotage and theft.
  • Joint Command and Inter-Agency Reform: Improve coordination between military, police, and intelligence agencies through unified command structures, shared intelligence systems, and joint operational planning.
  • Border Security Modernisation: Strengthen border surveillance using technology, improve customs and immigration coordination, and work with regional partners to block illegal arms trafficking and cross-border criminal movement.
  • Economic Inclusion as Security Strategy: Expand job creation, skills development, and youth empowerment programmes to reduce recruitment into criminal networks and address the economic drivers of insecurity.
  • Security Sector Transparency and Justice Reform: Strengthen oversight of security spending, enforce accountability for misuse of funds, and ensure swift prosecution of criminals and their financiers to restore public trust.

Nigeria cannot achieve stability, economic growth, or national unity without security. Security is not optional it is essential for national survival and progress.

Through disciplined leadership, modern systems, accountability and bold reforms, Nigeria can move from a nation under constant threat to one that is safe, stable, and secure.
