Youth Empowerment

Nigeria’s greatest asset is its youth population, yet this strength is being wasted. Millions of young Nigerians are unemployed, underutilised, and disconnected from meaningful opportunity. Instead of being the engine of national growth, many are trapped in frustration, survival struggles, and limited prospects.

A country where the majority of its young people cannot find opportunity, cannot achieve stability or long-term development.

Nigeria’s youth are not the problem they are the potential. But that potential is being constrained by deep structural failures in the economy, education system, and governance framework causing for a need to rebuild and reform.

Issues

Nigeria’s youth face deep and interconnected challenges:

  • Mass Unemployment and Underemployment: Youth unemployment remains critically high, forcing many into low-income, unstable informal work with limited future prospects.

  • Skills Mismatch and Weak Education System: The education system remains largely theoretical, leaving graduates without the practical and digital skills required in today’s economy.
  • High Cost of Living and Economic Pressure: Rising inflation and economic instability have made survival increasingly difficult for young people across the country.

  • Insecurity and Exposure to Crime: Unemployment and poverty continue to push vulnerable youths into crime, while many others are victims of insecurity that disrupts their education and livelihoods.

  • Mental Health and Social Pressure: Rising economic hardship, combined with limited mental health support, is increasing stress, anxiety, and frustration among young Nigerians.

  • Political and Civic Exclusion: Despite reforms like “Not Too Young to Run,” youth remain underrepresented in governance and decision-making structures.

  • Brain Drain (“Japa” Syndrome): Growing frustration has led many young Nigerians to seek opportunities abroad, weakening the country’s long-term human capital base.

Solutions

Addressing the youth crisis requires bold investment in people, skills, and opportunity creation. A Makinde Administration will prioritise youth as the centre of national development through the following reforms:

  • Mass Job Creation Through Economic Expansion: Drive employment by supporting agriculture, manufacturing, technology, and renewable energy sectors that can absorb large numbers of young workers.
  • Support for Youth Entrepreneurship: Expand access to affordable credit, startup funding, and mentorship programmes to help young Nigerians build and sustain businesses.
  • Skills Development and Education Reform: Restructure education to focus on practical, technical, and digital skills that align with real labour market demands.
  • Digital Economy and Tech Empowerment: Scale up digital skills training in areas such as software development, cybersecurity, AI, and creative industries to unlock global opportunities.
  • Vocational and Technical Training Expansion: Invest in hands-on training in trades such as construction, agriculture, fashion, and renewable energy to build employable skills.
  • Private Sector Job Incentives: Encourage companies to hire young people through tax incentives, internship schemes, and public-private employment partnerships.
  • Youth Inclusion in Governance: Strengthen youth participation in leadership, policymaking, and political structures to ensure their voices shape national decisions.
  • Infrastructure for Opportunity: Improve electricity, digital connectivity, and transport systems to reduce the cost of doing business and expand access to opportunities.

Nigeria cannot build a strong future while its youth remain excluded from opportunity.

Youth empowerment is not charity; it is a national investment in stability, productivity, and growth.

Reset Nigeria is a commitment to unlock the potential of young Nigerians and turn them into builders of a stronger nation.

With disciplined leadership, economic reform, and strategic investment, Nigeria can transform its youth from a struggling population into a powerful force for national development.
